It’s International Mindful Eating Day! I’ve been increasingly mindful about being mindful, for several reasons. I’m taking a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) class right now, and will be doing some professional training in mindful eating starting in March. I’m also continuing to cultivate my occasionally lapsed meditation practice. Because I’m a book geek, I’m always on the lookout for worthy mindfulness books for my library. I recently picked up a few books from Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, and I’m looking forward to the upcoming book, The Craving Mind, from Judson Brewer, MD, PhD. Dr. Kabat-Zinn is founding executive director for the Center for Mindfulness at University of Massachusetts Medical School, and Dr. Brewer is director of research.
Could you could benefit from a little more mindfulness in these increasingly distracted times? If so, I encourage you to check out The Center For Mindful Eating (TCME) website. Dr. Brewer’s 2015 TED talk, “A Simple Way to Break a Bad Habit” is also well worth 10 minutes of you time (watch it mindfully, please). He discusses how we form habits, and how habits relate to emotional eating.
